“I think combined with the Felua and the Notus, our next step should be heading into the Elven Forest.” Desmond said quietly, sharing a wild idea that Frederick had referenced earlier. “Someone there doesn’t want Claire associated with the Elves.”

They were lying on their bed in the manor house after dinner. Claire was lying against Malcolm, Everett’s head on her stomach and her feet in Desmond’s lap. Puck was curled up next to her like a little heater against Claire’s side. She was so comfortable she was almost asleep when Desmond spoke.

“So naturally, into the heart of their territory is where you want to head?” Everett shifted to frown at him.

“Think about it. She was found close to Fae land and someone is intentionally spelling Elven creatures. I think whoever it is knows Claire will find answers in the Elven Forest and is trying to dissuade her from venturing near there.”

“And again, you want to head straight into the danger?” Everett repeated.

Desmond shifted to look at Claire. “I don’t suppose there’s any way we can convince you to stay here?”

Claire huffed out a short laugh, “Being that I’m the reason why you would be heading into danger, absolutely not.” There was no way she was going to let her Triad go into the Forest by themselves when Claire was the whole reason for this mess. She didn’t want them getting hurt because of her.

“What if we just stopped searching?” She asked softly, staring up at the ceiling.

“Stop searching for what?” Desmond asked, rubbing her feet.

“All of it. For my parents, into the Council and Great War, all of it.”

She kept her gaze firmly on the ceiling, thoughts of her conversation with Helene from earlier drifting in her mind. If she had to give up answers to keep them safe she would.

“Why do you say that, little treasure?” Malcolm cupped her cheek so she had to look at him.

“I just don’t want you all to get hurt trying to find answers for me.” Claire said. She would walk away from this fight if it meant keeping her new family safe. “I have a family here with you, who needs anything else?”

Malcolm’s golden eyes softened down at her and his thumb stroked her cheek. “You don’t need to worry about us.”

“But I do,” Claire pointed out, rolling her eyes at him with a smile.

“I hear your concerns, Claire, but if the Council has truly been lying about the Great War then people deserve to know. And even if they aren’t, you deserve answers.” Desmond said.

“I don’t want answers if it means that one of you will get hurt.” Her eyes landed on Everett thinking of the slashes against his side by the Felua. He grabbed her hand on her stomach and squeezed.

“Give us a bit more credit, little mate.” Everett said softly. “We are trained warriors and one of the most powerful Triads in the realm.”

Claire frowned. She understood what Everett was saying but she still didn’t want to lose them. If she let them go into the Forest alone, she would lose them.
